Feds accuse foot doctor of massive Medi-fraud
"Federal prosecutors say a Middlesex County podiatrist bilked the government of hundreds of thousands of Medicare dollars by submitting claims for treatments that were little more than massaging feet and clipping toenails. A civil complaint filed in federal court in Newark said Ming Tung, who lives in East Brunswick and has offices there and in Jersey City, ignored warnings about improper billings, instead filing more claims. Two years ago, authorities say, Tung received $856,000 in Medicare payments, or nearly 24 times the average reimbursement for a New Jersey foot doctor. Last year his filings topped $1.6 million. In many cases, Tung billed for visits to low-income apartment complexes in Middlesex and Hudson counties, where he allegedly gave foot massages in the lobbies. " Full story

Podiatrist gets death penalty
A federal jury decided that a Chicago podiatrist should get the death penalty for killing a disabled patient to keep her from testifying against him in a Medicare fraud case. Ronald Mikos, 56, was convicted earlier this month of murder, and was also found guilty of defrauding Medicare out of more than $1 million by billing it for thousands of operations that he never performed. Mikos shot Joyce Brannon six times in the neck and head days before she was scheduled to tell a federal grand jury about how he claimed to have performed numerous operations on her that never took place. Her grand jury subpoena was found near her body in her apartment.

Leg Lengthening
In an age when plastic surgeons appear on television offering to improve patients' eyes, noses, chins, lips and breasts, perhaps it's not surprising that a Georgia podiatrist offered to make a 5-foot-5-inch man taller for $40,000. But by performing a leg-lengthening procedure purely for cosmetic reasons, the podiatrist broke the law and was negligent, a panel of the Georgia Court of Appeals declared recently. Elective use of the procedure -- in which the patient's legs are surgically broken and the bone segments are kept separated until they grow together to increase their length -- violates the Georgia Podiatry Act, according to the decision. ...
